A man's game

I'd studied dance in Chicago every summer end taught it all winter, and I was well-rounded. I wasn't worried about getting a job on Broadway. In fact, I got one the first week.

C'est Si Bon

"It's all about falling in love with yourself and sharing that love with someone who appreciates you, rather than looking for love to compensate for a self love deficit."

Eartha Kitt rides a bike down the street in New York City. Photographer Gordon Parks shot this for LIFE Magazine in July, 1952.

Lady of the Night

Well, I'll say I have an incredible ability to fantasize - I really do. I don't have to have things tangible to be able to see them, and therefore I enjoy so many things, because they're in my mind.

Take This Heart of Mine

Living with father was something like living with a king, a very peculiar, changeable, cruel and all-powerful king. You were supposed to tip-toe around his moods. You were supposed to do anything to win his favor. I never did. Even though winning his love was the ultimate goal of my childhood, I defied him. I hated his attitude. I thought I could win his love through singing, so I sang my heart out. But the better I became, the greater his demands.

I'm afraid of you? Are you cracked?

Motorcycles, rebellion, and the open road wouldn’t be the same without Marlon Brando’s “The Wild One” (1953).

"It begins here for me on this road. How the whole mess happened I don't know, but I know it couldn't happen again in a million years. Maybe I could of stopped it early, but once the trouble was on its way, I was just goin' with it. Mostly I remember the girl. I can't explain it - a sad chick like that, but somethin' changed in me. She got to me, but that's later anyway. This is where it begins for me right on this road."

Tutus for Tennis

Designer Teddy Tinling had reason to know what makes a good tennis dress. For 22 years, until the flare-up over Miss Moran's pants caused him to resign, he was Master of Ceremonies of the center court at Wimbledon. He dressed almost every important woman player—and about half of the men, including Seixas and Trabert. Mass-produced copies of his custom-designed Wimbledon costumes were also sold to more than 10,000 less well-known but equally ardent players in England and in America.

Sweet Love - Anita!

I don't let people use me. That's why I like a small number of people in my life. The more people in my life, the more complex it becomes, so I just try to keep it at a minimum.
